On the captaincy subject, it has to go to someone guaranteed to be playing for the next 2 years, that's Root, Stokes, Archer and Broad. Every single other person in the team/squad SHOULD be looking over their shoulder, including, and specifically for me, Buttler and Bairstow given Pope's form in county and Foakes' record for England. Of those 4, can't be Root or Archer which leaves Stokes and Broad. As i'd posted a week or so ago, i'd go Broad at the moment, his change in attitude and approach to bowling these past 9 months has been brilliant, he's nailed on to play every week, doesn't have the distraction of playing all 3 formats and has been around the team for years. As an interim skipper for the next 2-3 years I think he's the right man. Stokes, too much on his plate at the moment, and if we're being honest, he's only recently actually rediscovered his form post Bristol, up until the WC he wasn't really showing his worth with bat of ball, so lets not fuck that up by putting more pressure on him with the captaincy.

Coverton replacing Woakes confirmed as the one change*. Slightly surprised
*Well, and Denly 2, Root 3, Roy 4

Apparently OT is likely to be the fastest pitch of the series, so they want someone with bounce. Isn’t Broad meant to be the tall bouncy rfm though? Curran must feel absolutely gutted.

I like COverton, but come on man, Sam Curran's record for England is too good to ignore

If it's fast and bouncy, they've picked the wrong Overton. Delighted for Craig and hope he does well, but it does feel harsh on Curran.
On the other hand, Coverton did bowl Steve Smith through the gate in his previous godlike Ashes series, so fingers crossed...

Decent start from Broad. But so far, the two test match wins have come when a team’s lost both their openers for single figure scores in both innings...

Broad to Warner is a very enjoyable subplot of this series.

Right, that’s the preliminaries out of the way. Now for some cricket.

Loving the new and improved Broad! What could have been these last 5 years, good figures could have been exceptional

Starting to come around to the ‘anyone but Root’ captaincy thing.

Why do County matches start at 1030 in Sept but tests stay as 11 o'clock starts? Something to do with floodlights, or one of those traditions that has people shaking heads in fury?

Fine sunshine tomorrow I assume. Mind you, feels like the bowlers could do with a break to get their heads back in the game.

Has anyone on the England team played more county cricket this year than labuschange? Overton maybe has. Seems to be a good warm up for test cricket doesn't it.....
