Matt Prior and Chris Adams have been out fishing all day. Finally reeled in a big one:

Sam Curran is England's 5th best test batsman according to the rankings. The guy's played 10 Tests and has three 50s.

Sam Curran is England's 5th best test batsman according to the rankings. The guy's played 10 Tests and has three 50s. Curran and Foakes must be watching half this batting line up and really struggling to understand how they can't make the team. Ditto long term absentee Mr Ballance. FWIW on the future selections, for me..... Burns Sibley Denly Root Stokes Pope Bairstow Archer Leach Broad Anderson (if fit - if not Curran @8) The tail is loooong, but fuck it, you've got to go with your best bowling attack, and trust your batting line up to make runs. Both Burns and Denly have bought themselves time with runs and spending time at the crease not getting out. Roy has got to go, if he wants to play red ball cricket for England, he needs to show something for Surrey too. Pope comes in at 6, his numbers in county cricket are impossible to ignore, Buttler drops out for me (toss up between him, Bairstow & Foakes for the wk position, shoehorning various WK bats into the team is not helping), same message as Roy, show something for Lancs in red ball please. As for Bairstow, get your head back on or go back to Yorks. Stop getting out to shit shots and play 5 day innings not 1 day innings.

Can ANYONE explain this image to me? At first all looks normal, but I am convinced that this image has somehow been photoshopped.....he's holding the bat right handed, but he's facing the wrong way! Thigh pad pointing away from the bowler towards the keeper, just, how on earth did he end up in this position facing a quick bowler! It looks to me like someone has taken a pic of him facing from the other end either missing, leaving or edging one and popped him into a different pic....I mean, Anderson isn't even celebrating. WTF is going on!!

So Australia’s Ashes prep has already included one decent tour game and an intra-squad match. Now they’re playing a near full strength Derbyshire, who finished their t20 fixtures around a week earlier than all other teams to play this fixture, denying their fans a potential exciting race to finish in the quarter final slots.
Do we get anything even close to this level of preparation available for away ashes tours?

I mean, it is Derbyshire. And they set up the intra-Oz tour game themselves.
Anyone know when Leus du Plooy qualifies for England?

Anderson out for the series, COverton into the squad.
Which means we retain all the batsmen and have no batting cover. Wonderful selecting.
Expect Scurran for Woakes to be the only change for this one. I'm going to Day 4 so fingers crossed we get that far...

Pretty mind boggling squad really...
Buttler averages 32 in FC cricket, and Roy averages 37. Neither of them have ever hit even a 150 for their counties, which shows a lack of temperament or willingness to play the long innings which is a vital part of your Test match skill set. I don't mind one of the two playing, lower in the order, to come in and attack with the tail when applicable, but why oh why have we kept both?! 62 runs at 8.9 as an opener for Roy...
Ollie Pope averages 60, and has two double centuries at the age of 21

I was pretty mad when Buttler got called up initially, I thought it was scandalous that he could be selected on the back of absolutely no red ball form in the preceding years but to be fair to him he bought himself time with a couple of good innings. Now though, with someone who bats at 5/6 in county in Pope averaging 60 in FC cricket he has to be under threat, but our 5-6-7 is so locked in now, as demonstrated with Foakes' dropping as well, that we just need to suck it up and get used to it. Especially in Buttler's case as if Root does get relieved of the captaincy, I reckon they'd give it to him. Absurd, totally absurd, but what else have we come to expect from England?
Roy....again, not happy when he was selected, but recognised at the time that we had a real shortage of talent at 1/2 and given his form for England in 50 overs there thought why not give him a go. That go has been given and shown to be a poor decision. The decision to move him to the 'safety' of the middle order is a sham in my view, there are players putting in the time in county cricket and actually making runs who should be in there ahead of him. In both cases it feels like the ECB are just persisting in hope, or waiting for an injury, so they don't have to jack them off and admit they made a cock up in bringing them into the team in the first place.

Glad* to see that Starc's back in form.
If Root is relieved of the captaincy, does anybody have suggestions who to give it to apart from Buttler? We can't expect Stokes to do everything. I've heard suggestions of Broad, which sounds like the best way to make him revert to bowling short with the new ball and reviewing everything.
In any case I'm pretty pro-Buttler now. I reckon he's got a higher ceiling than Bairstow. I do admit that he needs to be looking over his shoulder, but so does Jonny and that hasn't happened!
Roy was a stupid choice that's looking more stupid by the minute.

County captain, solid opener without much competition for his place in the team. Genuinely would like to see it.

Psssssssh, like he’s any more secure of his place than Buttler at this point.

Random observation, but I keep seeing Joe Root mentioned as part of the big four on twitter (with Kohli, Smith, Williamson ofc).
I think he's Cricket's Andy Murray.
A very good British batsman who's undoubtedly world class and one of our best for many years but is overhyped by our excitable British media and ultimately much less successful than the other three and perennially gets out shy of 100 (for Murray, it's QFs & SFs).
Still love them both, of course.
