England, in a good position, let it slip dramatically.
Stop me if you've heard this one before.

England, in a good position, let it slip dramatically. Stop me if you've heard this one before. With Root looking brilliant but failing to convert and Vince out in the 20s. Groundhog Test

Yep. I'm a big fan of Vince, but even I wouldn't have picked him. If only he could replicate his 80 in Brisbane more often.

Huge Vince fan too, he's even my picture here. But for me, he's just a solid County Championship player, not a Test player. Yet. He may still become one. He averaged over 60 in two years in D2 but 29, 34 and 33 in three D1 seasons since - not selection worthy based on that.
He does make the ODI and t20i squads in my opinion - last year, 463 runs at 77.16 in the One Day cup and 542 runs at 38.71 and 158 strike rate in the t20 (whilst captain!) both exceptional.

On Vince in ODIs - just how good Englands ODI batting is is being seriously overlooked right now as we all pile on the Championship for not producing test cricketers- turns out the emphasis on one day skills has led to a whole bunch of one day players- who'd have thought it?
When you realise that the England WC top six for the first game of the 2015 WC was:
Moeen Ali, Ian Bell (!), Gary Ballance, Joe Root, Eoin Morgan, James Taylor (Buttler was playing but at 7!)
or for even more lols, the 2013 Champions Trophy top order:
Cook, Bell, Trott, Root, Morgan, Bopara (and yes, Buttler at 7 again)
And now you could almost pick, without even beginning to scrape the barrel, almost any of Hales, Roy, Billings, Bairstow, Root, Morgan, Buttler, Stokes, Vince, Malan, Livingstone and Duckett

Now that we’ve got all these ODI batsmen, do you think there’s any chance we could return the focus to the format that’s not only important once every two/four years?

Re SB - I think we'd all love to see it happen, but GD's article a few weeks back summed up the problem we have on short form vs long form in a single sentance, 'If the ECB are judged by anything but financial criteria, they are a failure. But in modern sport the bottom line counts more than the top of the league'. The money for them is in the short form, so they'll sacrifice our test team to see us perform well there.

I also love this table, kudos to Smith, but just how ridiculous was Bradman!?!? Really wish i'd been able to see him play, that is just phenomenal, out of this world, better than the rest by an absolute mile
Batsman Innings Bradman (Aus) 68 Smith (Aus) 111 Sobers (WI) 111 Hammond (Eng) 114 Hutton (Eng) 116

Even then, Pierre, not sure why focus can't be on T20 and long-form. No reason for there to be more than one domestic one-day competition every two years. If a format has to miss out, surely it should be that one. You are right, of course, but a man can dream.

'tis a sad state of affairs, and on reflection, a 5-0 thumping may have provided some more impetus to the ECB to change things, as it is a (possible) 4-0, but strangely a closeish 4-0 may not do the trick, here's hoping that NZ tank us in the tests too, as it seems that only rock bottom will change anything in the test arena
