James Vince is due a recall.
James Vince.
James. Vince.
So, anyone think England have any hope at all?

Not sure what Vince has done to get back into the squad, feel a bit sorry for Westley.
I think if Broad and Anderson perform well England still have a chance in the Ashes.

Vince has 1631 runs at 41 this season across all formats. PCA ranks him as 11th most valuable english player across all formats (including 2 41 year olds and behind only Denly and Mitchell as specialist batsmen). He hasn't set the world alight but he knows the squad, he knows australia, he's got leadership experience and he's had a decent season on the whole.
I do think the batting looks weak, but I'd have an extra batsman, or no Ballance, rather than getting rid of Vince. Admittedly, he is my profile photo so I'm a bit biased...
Don't understand why Porter isn't in the squad, either. We love all-rounders too much! Think I'd replace Stokes with Porter, TRJ, Livingstone and Lawrence - and also remove Ball

More and more likely no Stokes for ashes, so maybe Porter will be called up. It is going to get very ugly this winter sadly

Porter is rmf, I'm not sure that'll cut it in Oz. I'd rather have Plunkett in the squad to be honest. Agreed with removing Ball. #freeNortheast
WnP, how many of those runs were in red ball? This is something that bugs me, it's a completely different game to white ball and yet you have Bayliss (and the populace at large) clamouring to get Buttler, and indeed Malan, into the Test squad on the back of mediocre red ball and astonishing white ball form. Vince is a top white ball player, I don't think anyone will say otherwise, but unless he shelves his drive he remains a mistake in the squad at this time.

I like Vince a lot. I wouldn't have picked him but I do hope he goes well.

So.....bets on which Lions player is first to be called up into the test squad? I'm thinking that if his ankle holds up and the bowling gets paggered to all parts that Mark Wood will get the nod

Nah, I reckon it’ll be a batsman. I’m going with Livingstone.
Later on they’ll pick Wood, he’ll get injured, and they’ll call up Garton in desperation by the fifth Test. Not Porter, who’ll somehow still take stacks for the Lions.

I believe it's a Rankin when you do it away. And the answer is almost certainly Crane I fear.

James Pattinson injured, which is one of the better bits of news for England in recent times

Is it? Surely the ideal Aussie bowling line-up is Starc aka Johnson mk. 2, Cummins aka Harris mk. 2, Hazlewood aka Siddle mk. 2, Lyon aka Lyon mk. 2, and whoever the latest attempt to recreate Shane Watson’s weirdly effective part-time bowling is. Need one more breakdown first.
Usually I’d be hoping that the best line-up can play the best line-up, but given that it already looks like Stokes will be out...

I mean when the rivals for good England news are "best player may be in court during first test" and "James Vince picked to play 3" then yes. Although Pattinson would be a bigger miss in English conditions, I'd still rather he wasn't available.
Not sure that Pat Cummins is anything like Ryan Harris mind.

They’re both right-arm fast and it completes the comparison nicely, what more do you want? I mean when the rivals for good England news are "best player may be in court during first test"... Oh no, what’s Moeen done?
