Well, on today's evidence I propose the solution to England's Test batting issues for both men and women is to make all eleven players captain

England captain carrying the batting again is it..... Less carrying it, more loading it onto a truck and speeding away with it. Heather Knight... wow.

I went to bed on the assumption this test match was petering out into a draw.
I was technically right, I suppose. But wrong in every real way. What a finish!

I won't pretend for one second that I know as much about women's cricket in England as men's, although I do watch a fair bit of it, but I think there's probably a reckoning approaching - partially due to professionalism, partially just the increased player base - for a few of England's long-time stalwarts.
Winfield-Hill is the obvious one who doesn't perform anywhere near the level she needs to, but as much as it hurts me to say, it might be time to move on from Cross & Shrubsole too. The one thing the Aussies did a few years ago was - whilst still the best side in the world - clearly move on from the Blackwells and a few other long term legendary figures and bring in younger players who were more athletic and better all round cricketers. I think that time is probably approaching for England. I know Mark Robinson did do it a bit with Edwards and Greenway, but nothing like that has happened since.
There look to be a few players in the A side who are very unlucky not to be making the first team - Farrant, A D-R and Eve Jones aren't the youngest but have excelled since becoming a pro, and if going for the generational shift then Bell, Arlott and Wong have every chance of playing a lot of games in the years to come (as well as Capsey, who's obvious at this point).
If this was the last test for a few players, then it was a hell of a game to go out on.

Well, that was a bit of a winter horriblis.
Not sure about the wisdom of bringing in Lamb for LWH one game before the WC - it's a change that's needed making for a while but to do it now feels very Morgan for Cook on the verge of WC2015 - unfair on both players.
Then to go down to 5 frontline batters with Ecclestone at 7 when we keep getting bowled out was... brave.
To a point it doesn't matter, Aus are just a very good team in ODIs and it'll be a huge shock if they don't clean sweep the WC, but not sure England gave themselves the best chance.

Really like the squad for the SA test - Lamb to open, A D-R and the next generation of seamers - Arlott, Davies and Bell. Brunt and Shrubsole huge shoes to fill but there's talent there.

Happy double-Test day! I have not been following the squad news, nor do I know anything about the newcomers, but I'm all the way up for another women's Test.
