Great all round team effort there, everyone bar Denly and Buttler scoring 35+ runs or taking 4+ wickets

Fantastic team performance from England and a breakthrough match for Pope.

Curran potentially bowling himself out of the team here if Archer is fit for the last one.....that thrown away first innings with the bat could really come back to haunt him I didn’t realise you were being serious about throwing that away! He was going for quick runs, like the team required, and doing the job Jos Buttler’s in the team for because Jos isn’t doing anything right now. I agree that his bowling hasn’t been great (too slow for the pitch?), but I think it’s ludicrous to criticise his batting this game. That said, Wood to 8 if him and Jofra play? Nah man, was being very serious! And I say this not as someone who wants him out of the team but someone who wants him IN the team, I think he's a player who has more capability with bat in hand than his numbers to date suggest, I certainly think he's better than an ave of 28. Whilst I appreciate the intent he showed, getting out when he did left us 413/7 which quickly became 420/8, had it not been for the Wood Pope partnership, we could have been all out for under 420-440, which in my view at the time, on that pitch wasn't enough - and in hindsight, I think if the Saffers had faced up to day 4 on 200/6 only needing an extra 20-40 to avoid the follow on rather than another 100, mentally it'd have been v different and with follow on avoided, winning that test would have been harder. On that pitch, with his talent, and a tad more restraint, I genuinely think there was a big score there for him, and if he'd nailed a big 80, 90 or even a ton, there'd be absolutely no way he'd be dropped for the next test, but we all know he's not the quickest bowler, and with England's current obsession with pace if Archer is fit he'll be in the team, as will Wood and Broad, which puts him first on the chopping block if someone is to go. And yes, Wood is defo ahead of Archer with the bat now!

I don't think it's Root, it's Faf. Get Faf to pick numbers and then limit your selection to the ones he doesn't.
Five seamers, Jesus H. Christ. 🤦🏻♂️

Root's toss win % is around the 77% mark which is anti Faf

South Africa didn't win the toss: they are the toss.

This bit on the Cricinfo article about Stokes's misdemeanour made me laugh:
'The spectator's comments were not broadcast, though it is understood that the spectator involved, who is middle-aged, suggested Stokes looked like the singer, Ed Sheeran.'
The thought of it!

Now that's more problematic for Sam. I reckon that's the 'innings' that Pierre should have highlighted that could put him under the microscope.

Say he'd scored the big one that was there for taking last time out tho.... That innings today would've been shrugged off... As for SA, slightly reminiscent of windies in the late 90s at the end of curtly and Courtney, batting line up struggling, couple of great bowlers but wow, once the change bowlers come on there is nothing

Mark Wood, Mark Wood, he's very very good... rather than being just full of potential like he used to be but that doesn't scan.
