It works both ways, doesn't it . I think Cook will do very well in this series with the bat. Even if he doesn't, he can win the series and redeem himself. I hope he does both, though.

Cook's mind is elsewhere, I think he wishes there wasn't a test series at the moment. Sure he would like to be home with new family

And no one can blame him. Daughters especially. They can turn the most macho heart in the world into quivering mess. He's very blessed.

The last England teenage batsman to debut was... Compton. Denis Compton. If Hameed turns out half as good as the legend, he (and everyone) will be pleased.

Well everyone are talking about voting, and I just did some of that too. But instead, it was in an online poll about cricket, asking us to vote for the top 5 England captains in their history. Here is my vote: What's your take? 1. Brearley, because in any XI, he is worth a place just for his captaincy. 2. Vaughan because of 2005 and many other series wins. A decent batsman too, but 2005 Ashes was against, possibly the best team ever to play cricket in my opinion (Windies of 70's may have a word or two about that) 3. Cook, considering the changeover from a boring, losing team to an exciting and a thrilling team to watch. That and a ton load of runs. 4. Strauss - Has a great record as captain vs the Aussies. That said, I now think this was the dumbest choice that I made. Highly debatable selection and in hindsight I would have chosen Hutton or Close. 5. Douglas Jardine - Leg theory or Body Line or blatant murder plan, it was a cunning and wily tactic. Cricket was never the same after that. Whom do you think are best English captains of all time? P.S. Having problems uploading pics. Help!

Well done Moeen to score a century. Stokes looking good here, 85* and the score is 451/7. Woakesy is the first batsman in this innings to be out for a single digit score. Rashid comes in ahead of Ansari.

I've got a 4 week old child at the moment.....sometimes I wish I was in India and able to get some sleep! Benefit is being up early enough to catch a load of cricket.....5-0 prediction looks to have been blown out the water
I can't remember the order of my top 5 captains, but Cook didn't get in there I know that. For as much as he's a bit of a bell now, Vaughan was top for me, despite only skippering 8 Close made it in, Strauss was there, Brears and I think I went Nas in 5th, more so for the off field changes with central contracts and the more professional approach to international cricket which as a Yorkshireman now regulary do my nut in but have turned us from a laughing stock in the 90s to a genuinely top team.

Rashid is out! 465/8 as Ansari takes guard. That is a really stupid way to be dismissed considering the scoreboard, that Stokes is on 94* and in general, a very poor shot. But hey, he has contributed more that what Ballance would have.
EDIT: Ali is ranked higher than Stokes in ICC All-Rounder rankings. Botham is refreshingly good in commentating. And a lot of Indian youngsters (esp ladies) are in the stadium. Interesting to watch, this.

can anyone shed light on india's decision not to prepare a rank turner?

Thats a 100 for Benjamin Stokes. Well done! So that's two left-handers scoring a century here. As for rank turner, I think England paying three spinners might have had a say.

In reply to the first ton since Clarke in 2013.....Away teams have now scored 3 tons since India last scored one....remarkable!

It might have something to do with kohli s ego and maybe even the fact that generally Rajkot is a road and the best one in India too. while it was turned into a rank Turner last year for the early part of ranji trophy so Ravindra Jadeja could get some form it reverted back to type as the season went on
Also, the new Zealand didn't have a single rank Turner and in fact one of them was a green seamer and India still won 3-0. That and the fact that this is the first test at this venue might have dictated the conditions.

It's prob happened before, and a number of times, but I wonder, how many times have England fielded an 11 with all players having first class tons to their name?
