Not too long now.
Cook/Hales/Compton/Root/Ballance/Stokes/Bairstow/Ali/Broad/Anderson/Finn
Is there any doubt that this is going to be the England team, fitness permitting? Should it be? I've got to say that I don't feel particularly comfortable about either Compton or Ballance right now, while Hales has mostly benefited for not being on the radar.

Quite a bit of doubt about that I think. Vince is pushing Ballance, who needs a score in the Championship, whilst the rumours seem to suggest that we might see changes at the top of the order as well.
Think it's nailed on from 6 downwards mind.

Not Vince again. He's not done much to recommend himself over Ballance this season in my eyes, and his previous season was even worse. Is this a Michael Vaughn thing? It sounds like it might be a Michael Vaughn thing.

I agree Vince has not done enough to warrant a place in the test side.

I don't know anything about the Sri Lankan side any more. Apart from that Mathews, Chandimal, and Prasad are still good, Herath is still still good, and Thirimanne has been given the sort of rope that even Alastair Cook could wrap three times around his waste.

Not sure about Compton or Ballance.
Vince ended last season strongly, and obviously made a hundred the other week. He's performed well for the Lions, his handful of T20i appearences went well and apparently Baylis likes him.
I've seen several cricket writers suggest that England feel he may be test class, and that it might be about time we find out.
Not sure when the ECB will announce the squad, but there are two Hampshire fixtures before the 1st test. If Vince makes another hundred or two I reckon he's got an excellent chance of a call up.
Oh, and for what stats are worth...
Since the 1st August 2015 (because its a neat cut-of date and is close to when Ballance was dropped from the test team and its my birthday) Vince has played 7 matches in the County Championship and Ballance has played 8 matches.
Vince: 558 runs @ 55.80 Ballance: 519 runs @ 39.92
If you include Ballance's FC fixture in the preseason (where he scored a hundred), he has 633 runs @ 42.20 in FC cricket since 01/08/2015.
Obviously Ballance has the better overall record as well as a test average of 47, but a Vince selection is not quite so outrageous. He just had a really, really awful first half of last season.
Anyway, perhaps both will be selected if Compton gets dropped?
Edit: for the sake of comparison, in Vince's 7 FC matches before 01/08/2015 he scored 264 runs @ 18.86. So quite a turnaround since.

I feel like such a Vince fanboy after writing that (I guess I sort of am) but I did find the stats interesting.

Could be a deciding round of matches, this. Exciting stuff. (It's Middlesex vs. Hampshire, so I wouldn't mind Vince bombing out of competition at all. )

I guess Robson and Bell have both brought themselves back into contention with good starts to the season, threatening Hales and Compton, probably. Essentially, it's probably three from Robson, Bell, Vince, Ballance, Hales, Compton. The other 8 in the team you suggested are pretty much certain. As a Hampshire fan I'm not sure what I want, Hampshire minus Vince might struggle for batting bonus points unless Carberry and co step up...

Does Carberry's century today bring him back into contention or will he be deemed too old at 35? Personally I'm pretty certain they'll say his England career is over

Between his age and 1 hundred in 18 months I think we can safely say his England days are over.

In fairness, he was clear by 350 runs as Hampshire's top scorer in CC games last year, even if he didn't get a century. But I do agree with you. Jason Roy is another they might be looking at, and he got a fifty today
