Which is being a part-time bowler who opens the batting and doesn't score runs?

Sugar, we've lost Finn to a stress injury. Wood, you're up (ooh matron). Hopefully he recovers, or that's a lot of bowling for the rfms.

Just saw the Finn news. At least we have Wood as a replacement! Not like our next man up isn't good!

Apparently Yasir Shah's had a back spasm and is doubtful... that could be very helpful for England.

You want it to be the two best sides possible facing each other - at the same time, has a bowler's injury cast so much shadow over an England series since McGrath in 2005?

Shame about Finn but don't think he would have made the 11 anyway. I'd also be gutted is Yasir can't play. It's good news for England but i was looking forward to watching him. Eng could do with the test of a playing a quality spinner too.

Cook, Ali, Bell, Root, ? , Stokes, ? , Rashid, Wood, Broad, Anderson.
So the only question is which two of Buttler, Bairstow and Taylor get the nod.

Bairstow and Taylor for me. Think it'll be Buttler and Bairstow though.

I want Bairstow and Taylor to play as well, but I don't think England will play Taylor. I also hope Yasir Shah recovers and plays tomorrow.

But why on earth would you play four pace bowlers in the UAE and not have a regular opener? Mine and the logical choice would be Cook Hales Bell Root Taylor Bairstow Stokes/Wood Ali Rashid Broad Anderson Given England won't drop either Stokes or Buttler, I'd say play two seamers, keep Stokes as your third and have six proper batsmen and two spinners. Also it would be a shame if Shah doesn't play

Mike Atherton in The Times suggests he would play Ali at number 5, and that you need a specialist opener. Either Hales is good enough and they should have gone with him, or he shouldn't be on the tour. Would suggest a team of:
Cook, Hales, Bell, Root, Ali, Stokes, Buttler/Bairstow, Rashid, Wood, Broad, Anderson
Which to be honest, is something like what I would have gone for too.

What possible reason is there for playing four quicks in the UAE? Is Stokes playing as a specialist batsman? Is Wood going to bowl more than ten overs in the match?
I think I'd go with:
Cook, Hales, Bell, Root, Taylor,Bairstow, Ali, Rashid, Broad, Wood
Can't see what Anderson or England have to gain from Jimmy playing in this series at all, but now I've said that he'll probably be the man of the series.
Either way I fear we're going to be lambs to the spinning slaughter.

I completely agree with you re the lineup, even if it only has 10 players Ideally you'd want 6 batsmen, including keeper, two spinners and three seamers in the UAE. Re the slaughter bit, if Yasir Shah is out, I think you stand a very good chance of even winning the series because the replacements are nowhere near as good and Azhar Ali, arguably their in-form batsman is already out for the first test.

That is a pathetic shot by Masood. Anderson has the first wicket, short ball does the trick, as the ball hits the helmet on its way to the stumps.
EDIT: Given Pakistan are without their No.1 batsman and spinner from recent times, the pessimism surrounding the England side on cricinfo is surprising. Then again, any side that converts a top-order batsman/part-time spinner into front-line spinner and then into an opener, when you have a specialist opener waiting in the wings, is perhaps one that demands pessimism from its fans.
