Lancs have signed Brooke Guest, a right handed wicket-keeper batsman. That was a much needed signing given that the whole circus started after Davies got injured and Croft was forced to keep. Poysden and Mellor have signed new deals with Warks. Santner has rejoined Worcs. Trego has signed a contract extension.
Essex have signed Neil Wagner for the first half of Championship. What a bowler he was to us, and the downturn and producing roads started right after he left. Hardus Viljoen has joined Derby as Kolpak signing.
Sussex have signed Vernon Philander. Now that is a really good signing even though he would stay with them only for part of the season. Also, Lottie has moved from Kent to Hants.
Gloucs have signed Andrew Tye for the Blast. Daryl Mitchell has signed a FOUR year deal with Worcs, he is 33 now, not sure how that would go. Yorkies have signed Peter Handscomb as their overseas signings for all formats. Interesting.

Two huge signings have made me wake up this morning... Hampshire signing both Kyle Abbott and Rilee Rossouw on long term Kolpak deals. Great signings from Hampshire's point of view, but quite bad that both would give up on decent international careers to play for Hants

Nevertheless, pretty chuffed with the team we've built up:
Adams, Alsop, Bailey, Vince, Rossouw, Dawson, Ervine, Abbott, Edwards, Crane, Topley.
Will Smith on the side, Carberry hopefully to come back one day too and then experience like Gareth Berg and Chris Wood spare for bowlers. Plenty of good youngsters - Wheal, McManus, Weatherley, Taylor. I'm pretty optimistic about this season!
Of course when Brexit actually happens we'll lose Kolpak

Oh yeah. Edwards, Abbott, Rossouw, Gareth Berg and Ervine.. Project Kolpacking seems to be going fine. Add Bailey to that, that is a majority of foreigners in the squad. That is a farce really, to see Hants packing so much of them. All this, and Ryan McLaren is listed as an overseas signing. Maybe ECB has to step in and clear this mess. It would really be silly to see all counties stack up so many overseas players.

Hampshire board meeting: "We've taken a nosedive in popularity, after our unjustified non-relegation which we're not really responsible for. We need to do something to get the cricketing faithful back on our side." "Take two of South Africa's better players on as Kolpaks?" "GENIUS."

Really sad that the economics of cricket (and in fairness to cricket, the total collapse of the rand which is a bit outside their control) have led to this. Fantastic signings for Hampshire on paper if their hearts are in it, but awful for cricket. I love the County Champ but we can't pillory the IPL for stopping Windies players playing internationally and then praise this.

I guess you could argue it's good for the Hampshire youngsters (contrary to what some are saying), it all depends on your view. In some people's eyes, there is a massive gap in terms of quality between Division 1 and Division 2. Hampshire have oh so nearly been relegated in the last two seasons, so perhaps would get relegated in 2017 without a stronger squad. Thus the youngsters who came through would be against weaker opposition, and not become as good. The two extra spaces in the team now taken by Rossouw and Abbott might've been held be weaker young players who would never make it that far anyway. As it is, we're now more likely to stay in D1, giving a harder test to the young players coming through and more competition so they can strive harder to improve. They get to learn from two experienced international stars - something that Hampshire lack, with the likes of Vince, Carberry and Dawson the only ones with England experience - and limited at that.
On the whole, yes, it is bad for cricket. International cricket should be the pinnacle of their careers. Abbott has been messed about in his international career but now seems first choice and Rossouw was on the edge of the test team, we're told. Tis a shame that financial security is much easier to get by giving that up...

The financial element is interesting to read about on ESPN for Abbott, his wage at Hants isn't going to be more than his current CA wage, and it rules him out of the lucrative IPL, it's the longevity of the contract which looks to have sold it to him, 4 years plus potentially future roles.
It truly is a shame that there are only 3 nations who can afford to pay their players a wage which means they don't have to look elsewhere for financial security though, it's torn the Windies apart and if it were to happen to more Saffers we really could lose one of the big boys of test cricket which would be a nightmare

It is a shame to see so many people deserting the Saffers team. While many have blamed the quota system, that argument isn't true in case of these departees. The bowling attack consisting of Dale Steyn, Morne Morkel, Philander and Rabada would mean Abbott's role is bit part. The same goes for Rilee as he has the likes of impressive Bavuma, Faf, Duminy ABD and Amla ahead of him. Its hard that it had to be these two, who were just lurking around the first XI were to depart. Nobody bats an eyelid when the players who couldn't cut it there were signed as Kolpaks (like Viljoen, Petersen et al). While Abbott is, by no means a huge loss for SA, inaction would lead to more damage when players who are about to break into the team leave. CSA have to do something to stop the rot. Whilst they cant do anything about the Rand, they can offer longer contracts (3 to 5 years).
All said, I still can't understand how Ryan Mclaren is supposed to be an overseas signing.

Meanwhile Durham look to be signing Steven Cook as not-a-Kolpak.
I'm supporting Durham this season.

Up next in the Kolpak pipeline: David Wiese is off to Sussex, joining fellow Kolpak player Stiaan Van Zyl. Having signed him, and Archer/Philander, it would be interesting to see if Garton gets enough game time.
Somerset have signed Dean Elgar as Not-a-Kolpak! He would be replacing Chris Rogers at the top of the batting lineup.

Lancashire join the Kolpak train, signing Dane Vilas and my-God-is-he-still-playing's Shiv Chanderpaul. I loved Shiv as a player but he's so far past his best I could see that one going throughly awry. Vilas a good player, really hope he doesn't directly block Alex Davies' development though.
