Did not expect to see that this morning! Can't wait for it to be shattered in the first two overs tonight.

Oh yeah there's a lot of overly cheery people who've watched all night and are missing the fact we're still plenty behind. Big improvement and positive sign for the series but still well behind in this test

A return to form after the competent moment there.

It's like in football, when you're 4 nil down at half time but get an early goal back, only to go on to lose 8 1. That excitement and hope gone so so fucking quickly last night.

I do have some sympathy with the lack of preparation and think five of the team - Root, Malan and the three seamers all come out with some credit.
I do worry that if you made a list of England's ten best test cricketers you have Joe Root and nine right arm seamers. Good luck balancing that side...
Root Jimmy Stokes Broad Woakes Robinson Archer Wood And so on...
Mind you, any of them batting 6 might be more welcome than another Bairstow return

The mood music feels likes we're going for a classic shit batting, shit fielding, drop three bowlers England selection meeting.

Much better timezone this.
England have picked their best cricketers, and unbalanced the team in doing so. Over rates discourse is going to be very loud over the next few days...

Better? Not sure about that, I have to watch Australia rack up 500 in real time.
Also 'best team' is once again packed with rfms. The real best team has Mark Wood in it.

Oh I agree it's not the best team. It's the best cricketers, and there's a difference.
Not sure Jos taking a blinder to dismiss Harris and then dropping an easier one off Marnus is a great exchange.

There is a real inevitability about this one already isn't there. No one looks threatening with the ball, economical at best.....by the time the lights come into it our bowlers will be hot and tired and not able to take advantage......500 could well be on here!

If I had to describe the current bowling in one word, the word I would choose would be pedestrian.

Look, it's a flat pitch and they have three genuinely excellent batsmen in their top four. They're allowed to play well.
Problem is, we dropped Labuschagne again - England's fielding is a huge problem and has been for a couple of years now.
The fact that I think we'd have done better in both tests with the bowling attacks swapped over is by the by really...
