Central contract lists out today....rather incredibly Jack Leach, who they made carry drinks all year, is now the only spinner with a central contract.....arse meet elbow!
Malan on full contract suggests he's in for the long (or as long as long can be in the English batting line up if you're not Joe Root) haul, and if we play in Aus I expect to see him at number 3
Zak Crawley.....lucky to have retained his central contract, suggests he's not quite on the scrap heap then as he's nowhere near the white ball teams.
Ollie Robinson rightly gets one, poor Sussex though, a number of their better players poached by 100 (spits) counties and they'll now barely see Robinson again, ever.

Full list here
England central contracts: Moeen Ali, James Anderson, Jofra Archer, Jonny Bairstow, Stuart Broad, Rory Burns, Jos Buttler, Zak Crawley, Sam Curran, Jack Leach, Dawid Malan, Eoin Morgan, Ollie Pope, Adil Rashid, Ollie Robinson, Joe Root, Jason Roy, Ben Stokes, Chris Woakes, Mark Wood.
Increment contracts: Dom Bess, Tom Curran, Chris Jordan, Liam Livingstone.
Pace bowling development contracts: Saqib Mahmood, Craig Overton, Olly Stone.
Forgot to mention the Tom Curran increment contract, fuck me, has he got dodgy photos on key ECB people or what!?!?

Dom Sibley not getting a contract and Zak Crawley keeping his central contract is an absolute shiter of an outcome.

Ashes squad out and is extremely predictable. Lions will be far more interesting, and the key question is of course how many Lions debut in the fifth test...

Can't wait to SMASH the Aussies with our intimidating rfm attack (plus one barely used spinner)!!!!

To be mildly fair to England, that is enforced. They've picked Wood, Stone and Archer are injured so it's only really Saqib who they've not selected and I'm sure he'll be on the lions tour.
Robinson and Overton did pretty good numbers in Oz on the last Lions tour, so fingers crossed they can be effective. At least our RFM is mostly seam and bounce focused, which seems more likely to succeed than swing.
God knows how they're going to balance the team without Moeen or Stokes. Suspect the answer is that both Leach and Bess carry drinks all tour, which would make it odd to pick both of them.

I'm still expecting them to pick Jimmy and Broad for the first Test and be astonished as to why they fail to take 20 wickets. Joverton might have been a pick for the squad.

Love Joverton, but six wickets in 8 first class matches @ 75 does not an Ashes tourist make.
That move has not gone well for him yet. I hope it still does. He's had injuries too, didn't play after July.

I maintain that a genuine quick with an average of almost 100 is a better pick than a third rfm in Australia, unfortunately.
Not a problem if Wood stays fit (pick two other rfms and lose by not quite as much). I expect him to do this for the first Test and half of the second before Root's innovative approach of making him bowl 30 overs in a day breaks him.

You can't really argue with the squad, it's about as strong as possible in the absence of top players like Stokes and Archer. Wood and Robinson should be the first 2 names on the team sheet (well from a bowling perspective anyway), a spinning option is an absolute must, if only to try keep it tight so the bowlers don't get bowled into the ground, suspect that Leach would provide the better bowling but in a tail starting at 1, taking a break at 4 and restarting at 5 I can imagine that Bess will get picked for his batting ability instead.
I suspect that no matter what 11 are chosen that we'll not be good enough, I don't see anyone other than Root scoring a ton and he can't do it every innings of every test. Our hope lies in Australia being equally shit, which is a possibility of course

Got our lions now: Tom Abell Josh Bohannon James Bracey Brydon Carse Mason Crane Matthew Fisher Ben Foakes Alex Lees Saqib Mahmood Liam Norwell Matt Parkinson Dom Sibley Jamie Smith Rob Yates
Pleased to see Bohannon in there, interesting to have 2 leggies as reserve but none "good enough" for the full squad

Like that list, only mild surprise is not seeing Garton in there perhaps (if not just as a net-bowler version of Mitchell Starc).
Oh, no Livingstone too. Apparently wants to spend Christmas with his family, so fair enough. Although Abell has a BBL deal too...
How many of them debut by the fifth test? I'd not be surprised if Saqib and Parkinson both do.

Stokes is back!
He'll be broken by the third Test, mind or body.

Well that's the team balance sorted at least.
Harry Brook replaced Sibley in the Lions squad too, putting him firmly in pole position for the "debuting in the fifth test at 3-1 down" role.
