It appears the ECB are considering scrapping the coin toss in division 2 next year as a trial. www.bbc.co.uk/sport/cricket/34917711The visiting team could choose whether to bat, bowl or have a coin toss if the conditions were uncertain. An interesting idea.

Yes, do it! Brilliant idea. Evens up things in the visitors' favour as well.
The only possible downside I can see is if teams prepare bore-draw pitches as a result. Hope that doesn't happen.

I think that's a pretty reasonable idea to be honest.
Durham might need to find another opening bat from somewhere though...

News confirmed! The visiting captain will be given the option of bowling first prior to the toss. If he accepts, no toss. If he rejects they'll have the toss as normal. This will occur in both divisions of the county championship. www.ecb.co.uk/news/articles/ecb-trial-change-coin-toss

Exciting news, interesting how they're doing it in both divisions now. Eager to see how it'll play out.

This, I think, is not as good. Teams won't want to encourage bowl-first pitches, so there'll be emphasis on preparing bat-first pitches, leading to potentially more bore-draws and the like. Boo.

A smaller change but the ECB have made helmets mandatory too, even when facing spin or slower bowling. Also applies to wicketkeepers standing up to the stumps and fielders within a certain distance of middle stump. www.bbc.com/sport/cricket/34940416

It's certainly a risk. But that could it turn encourage more bowlers who bowl to take wickets, rather than expecting the conditions to do it for them. If this means more attacking spinners and pace bowlers rather than medium pace and dart bowlers, then it could be good. Either way, it's not the worst experiment I've ever heard.
