Both these sides seem to keen to showcase what happens when an irresistible force meets a thoroughly movable object.

Not any more. You've got to assume that that's the game - unless it rains solidly for the next three days, which is a real possibility.

The Blundell-Mitchell partnership has now lasted longer and involved more runs than either first innings. Good work from Zaltzman.

Can we have the Simpsons' already dead .gif for the new England era please?

Probably not!
Cracking comeback, brilliant result. If we're being glass half empty, it told us nothing new about this team - four of them are brilliant, the other seven are patchy. Bit like West Indies before Ambrose and Walsh finished up, runs from Chanderpaul and Lara but the others nowhere near that level.
Still, easier to build on this than abject failure.

Embarrassing levels of pessimism from yours truly in retrospect. Nice to see Foakes scraping together a handful of runs, delaying his inevitable substitution with a more attacking keeper than McCullum would like more (despite playing with BJ Watling for much of his Test career...). And what a great game overall!

Second test same team that started the first. Cue Twitter getting very cross about Matt Parkinson I suspect...

Why do they reveal the teams a day in advance? Does anybody know the answer to this?

On this occasion, they've released Coverton back to Somerset to play tonight, assume they're doing the same with Parkinson and Brook. If it is to let them play in the T20 then that's unusually positive from the ECB towards their own domestic comps.

There's a CC round starting on Sunday as well so I assume all three will have permission to play in that too.

These rounds are scheduled to try and get some red ball practice into players during the test series. The schedule is indeed a mess, but this was at least a well intentioned mess. Good toss to lose so far.

England have lost this haven't they. That is very early call! NZ are batting well, the ball's not doing a huge amount. They're a good team, they'll have good sessions, we can't lose our shit immediately when they do.

And that's why. Bowlers only need to get it right once, batters need to do it all day.
