I find it hard to understand why Jack Leach isn't at Marcus Rashford levels of public love tbh. Went to a state school, used to work in a supermarket until he got into the Somerset side, chronically ill with Crohn's (and he was very, very ill last winter by all accounts) and an international cricketer who plays in glasses. I don't know what more people could want from their heroes.

I’m just needling you. I do like him and if I picked a ‘male players I like most’ XI he’d be in the side, forming a serviceable spin attack with Moeen.

To give my absolutely 100% original thoughts on today:
Angelo Mathews batted very well. I’m certain people will ask why England's spinners aren't destroying good players of spin on a track that resembles the M5, but personally today should focus on two very good batsmen, especially Mathews. It’s curious to see TMS saying that Sri Lanka would have the advantage with anything over 300 - this feels like the kind of pitch the old Sangakkara/Jayawardene/Samaweera side would have scored 700/4d on. There’s absolutely nothing in it right now. We shall see how many days that goes on for!

Oof Sibley's game starting v Spin needs some work. Saw on Twitter he averages 63 in the CC v spin, but new ball spin feels like a different beast here.
Noticeable how much more threatening Embuldeniya looks with the new ball than and older one, all about grip I suppose. Not suggesting that Jack Leach should be taking the new ball or anything like that but wonder if the orthodoxy of opening with seamers serves us well (especially as it's done nothing off seam or swing for Curran).

Also I'm really struggling to contain my "tell me again why Taunton turning from the first ball and being spin dominated throughhout isn't good preparation for test cricket" takes.
To quote a great man, needless to say, I had the last laugh.

It feels a lot like that ‘road’ might suddenly be exposed as nothing like one. Yeesh.
Also Sibley’s going to face a very high proportion of Jadeja if he opens in India. EDIT: Oh, apparently he won’t be playing. What a shame.*

Well, this tour hasn't really changed our views of many has it. Root, Broad, Anderson very good. Buttler and Bairstow quite good but not top tier. Everyone else a work in progress.

I dunno, I’d forgotten a bit just how good Root can be. Nice to be reminded.

Another magnificent knock from Joe Root, hopefully he has not used up all his runs on this series. I think the match is pretty even at the moment.

Nice to wake up to eight wickets for the spinners. Less good to now be watching Lasith Embuldeniya channelling his inner Joe Root
