Bess gets all the way to a terrible five wicket bag, and Leach outbowls him for 1-55. Stats rarely lie in quantity but Leach is probably due some evening out there.
England three overs left will probably be about even with Sri Lanka by the close of play today. Pretty much a perfect day for Joe Root, which hasn't happened so much recently.

Thoroughly enjoyable Thursday morning that, despite work being hectic.

Unique one against Root there just after he gets his 100 - came off the bat, into the ground, bounced back up into the glove and then to the fielder. Honestly have no idea if that's out or not!

I had no idea either!
Happily Athers quoted the relevant law - it doesn't matter how many times it hits the bat or glove, if the ball has been grounded after the first contact it's not out.

I suppose hitting the ball twice (and just difficulty) prevents you from gloving it into the ground then having a massive, uncatchable mow at it!

Oh he will, I'm sure of that. That ball spat to be fair.
In form Joe Root is the strangest batsman, he scores quickly without any fuss at all. He's on 168 and I can barely remember a shot he played - every run seems to come easy which is the sign of someone truly good at batting.
Hope Sri Lanka put up a bit of a fight in the second innings.

Yes, this is good. Need to look at these bowlers under pressure - Leach plugged away, he's not world class or anything but he'll do a job and the wicket ball was a genuine good one. Bess seemed like he'd lost Root's confidence a bit. Hopefully they both come back better tomorrow.

This is still good btw. Sri Lanka still effectively 10/7, and we've had a really good look at the bowlers against a tough side. Bess already looks a much better bowler than the first innings, hitting a spot much more often. Always dangerous to look ahead but I think this is significantly better news for the India series that us rolling Sri Lanka by an innings if all the wickets are self inflicted.
Plus Bess and Leach bowling in tandem for England, with Buttler keeping. No problem ECB, we're all very happy for you. Now please stop having a go at Taunton for spinning.

JONNY YOU HAVE 120 OVERS TO SCORE 60 RUNS. STOP WITH THE MAD SINGLES.

Still good! No amount of practice can simulate this sort of situation. We'll get these, just about.
Bairstow might want a quiet word about running mind.

I may just be high on the unadulterated good of a Jack Leach five for. Nobody deserves their success more.

I’m amazed that you’re not completely dispassionate regarding Jack Leach, Nemo.
Anyway, never in doubt. Cough.
