Reckon that'll shut up the detractors for a Test or two.

It'll certainly shut me up.
But my objection wasn't against Hales personally, he's clearly talented: it's against the idea of attacking openers and the requirement to score quickly all the time. He hasn't done either, and he's the only one to put a score up. It's not a coincidence.

It is strange the the selectors/media/fans love the style and success of Cook as an opener but seem reluctant to get somebody similar in to partner him. I blame Warner and his success with aus

Warner in particular, agreed. I've no problem with that style of play if conditions or bowlers warrant it - on a sunny day at a Lord's featherbed, or an Indian road, or an Australian baked strip, or when they're spraying it around like a drunk in a bush, but you cannot blindly attack at all times. Warner was notably more cautious in England and was rewarded with plenty of runs for it.
I'm sure I understand cricket much less well than players, selectors, coaches and most fans, so I can't really say I know better, but... apparently I do.
It's been a classy knock so far, in any case.

Dobell has been quite supportive of the stalwart innings Hales has played at Notts since coming back from his break. Granted he's always been a bit of a homer, but I agree with you that the "Hales needs to play his natural game" line was never the solution to his problems. I think just the opposite actually. Hales has had to learn NOT to play his natural game & that learning curve has come at a price. Hopefully he's getting more comfortable with a more traditional opening roll. Whether or not the casual England fan will accept another Cookie type seems to be the bigger question.

Still think Robson has a future up t'top of the order. Not biased.
Of course, if Hales can play like this more frequently then good luck to him. And if he ever does get to a decent position, watch out in the crowd. One man we know has the gears.

If it weren't for the attacking opener stipulation, he might well have been called. Might still be, if Hales goes to pieces or either of them snap a finger.
I don't see many others putting up scores in the "PICK ME NOW YOU IDIOTS" category.

I've got a bet on England to hit two 6's in their first innings so he's allowed to do that once more.

I don't object to the sixes, it's the failed sixes and reviews I object to.
Top innings Jonny, albeit not without two hiccoughs. More of the same required.
