I'm stunned with that. Pleasantly, but completely.
If that is the end of Bell, it's a real shame. An incredibly talented player who played some great innings, but never seemed to have the dominance over world cricket that he should have done.
Delighted for Compton, I wonder if they might have him lined up at 3? Not sure what Plunkett did wrong, would have him ahead of Jordan, but perhaps Jordan is a specialist 12th man (and a damn fine one of those he'd be!)

Batting line-up a fan's wet dream. Bowling line up a fan's moist nightmare. Both true pacers injured, Jordan kept in (although Nemo makes a good point), Rashid out for Sam (can kind of see it, but don't agree at all), I know many people don't think much of Woakes... At least Footsy stays in, and if that's not his England team nickname I will be very disappointed.

Thrilled for him, it's been so touch-and-go during the last twelve months.

So happy to see Compton and Ballance back, as well as the addition of Footitt. Very surprised to see Bell dropped, felt like he'd remain there forever. Have to admit that it'd be sad if it was the end of his England career to go out on such a low. On the other hand, Jordan for Plunkett, Samit for Rashid...really? Pretty odd choices.
The top comment on England's Facebook page announcing Compton's return made me laugh though - "And it's tea here are at the Wanderers. England are 45/0..."
Edit: Whitaker says Hales will get the first opportunity to open with Cook, which shouldn't be too surprising. Hope Compton can get one game at least.

Am I the only one who thinks Compton will come in at no.3, with hales and cook opening at least for the first couple of tests. Methinks this will be the Xi for the first test Hales cook Compton root balance stokes bairstow Ali woakes broad Anderson

I think Taylor will play, Sri. Swap Taylor for Ballance, unless Buttler continues to sparkle.
Reckon you're right about Compdog though.

I agree with Compton at 3 and Taylor at 5. Woakes may be replaced by Footitt.

Oops forgot Taylor. Ya, he will certainly take balance s place. I said woakes because England s test selection is still pretty conservative. They are more likely to play a more experienced player ahead of an unproven one, at least in the first test

Looks like ABDV is going to keep in SA. While I was looking forward to knocking over wicket 7 quickly and easily, maybe the increased responsibility will weigh his average down to only about 45? Maybe?

AB de Villiers is designated keeper: 1981 @ 58.26 (7 hundreds) is not keeper: 5883 @ 49.43 (14 hundreds) Or maybe not.

Finn's into the squad as well, but it'll still likely be Footsy for the first Test, which is exciting. I'm assuming it'll be Jimmy/Broad/Footsy/Stokes/Moeen vs. Morkel/Abbott/Rabada/Piedt.
Also, AB taking the gloves frees up a space. Wonder whether they'll try and put in an all-rounder, or just pick Van Zyl and have Duminy/Elgar fulfil the fifth bowler role.
