I'll agree with Mark on that aspect. Although there have been people moaning about the pitch, the fact it won't allow the Aussie pace attack to flourish, it gave us an early chance to put a foot down saying we aren't just going to roll over again. Let's hope Mo, Broad & Wood can take us up to around 400 today. A lot is going to depend on Stuart Broad. He got a 50 in 2013. He is capable of getting 30s and 40s regularly. Stuart Broad has to stay with Moeen for as long as he can and sell his wicket dearly. If he loses Moeen, a quick 30 will do more good to England's cause than scratching around 30 minutes for 6*.

Without a specifically quick pitch hopefully Broad will be more confident with the bat. I think that Broad's batting will spur his bowling on too. We need to take early wickets...

Besides, nothing will get up Australian noses like seeing Stuart Broad thump 40 quick runs!

Predictions for the day then?

It will go one of two ways: either 360ao, with the wickets falling in under half an hour; or around 420, if Broad and Moeen survive the first five overs.
And I would not like to predict which. My fear is the former. Instinct tells me the latter. I can see a 50 for Moeen and a 30 for Broad if they apply themselves.

That first 5 overs is crucial, it's normally the time Moeen gets out... Let's hope today is different!

I'm afraid I'm in the 360 all-out camp. Don't trust Moe against top-quality bowling, not even on a batting pitch. I think Broad might just score twenty, though. Let's say 375.
I've got this and the Cricinfo ticker on my computer, BBC live text on my 'phone, and tempted to put TMS on the 'phone too...

380 ao I think. We'll get a few this morning but less than we'd like.

Moeen is better than his press and batting at 8, instead of insulting him, seems to be invigorating him. It will also depend on how Mitchell Starc has passed the night. If he is struggling, all bets are off.

His shots last night looked promising, it's just the threat of restarting this morning and having to bat with the tail.
Bit of a small thing for me, we only bowled 88 overs yesterday- any ideas why they didn't continue until all 90 had been bowled?

I've just been reminded of Australia's 674 here last series. Wish I hadn't been.

Play started a fraction late because of rain and then there were 3 anthems to be sung instead of two (the Welsh anthem too), which took out a few more minutes and they ended up going well past the time allowance plus the extra half hour.

The starting ceremony was ridiculous. Absolute stupid. Should, could, have been cut down after a rain delay.
Balls taking two bounces through to t'keeper already.

Sky are saying Starc didn't bowl in the warmups this morning...
@steadz. Don't know really. We had the extra 30 minutes plus the 15 for the delayed start, and that's been that for as long as I know. Probably could slip in two extra overs on days like that, but where do you draw the line? To be honest I think over rates just need to improve.

Cricinfo live text saying it's the over rate. I imagine that the Mitchells don't have the shortest run-ups.
EDIT: Here goes Broad!
EDITEDIT: Ouch.
