New Year seems as good a time as any to have a stab at this:
Elgar Vijay Williamson (c) Smith Kohli De Kock (wk) Shakib Starc Rabada Lyon Anderson

I was pondering this just the other day!
Dean Elgar Jeet Raval Cheteshwar Pujara Steve Smith Joe Root Ben Stokes/Ravichandran Ashwin Sarfraz Ahmed Mitchell Starc Rangana Herath Kagiso Rabada James Anderson
Not sure whether Smith or Root to captain, although with that attack I suspect it wouldn’t matter much. Stokes/Ashwin for seaming/spinning pitches, natch.
Pujara > Kohli in Tests, although willing to acknowledge own bias. Kane doesn’t seem to have done that well of late, but class is permanent: he’ll be back. Sarfraz just over Bairstow, especially for keeping to the spinner(s).

Pujara was desperately unlucky not to make my top order. I rank Kohli slightly ahead of him, and Kane about equal, edging it for captaincy.
Shakib snuck in ahead of Ashwin mainly for variety. Stokes would have been a conditions alternative had he been available for selection at the moment.

Cook Warner Smith Kohli Root Stokes de Kock Starc Rabada Lyon Anderson
If I was picking a best team, or team of the year, I'd go for Elgar over Cook. But I'm not, this is a dream team.

I’m going for the team I’d most like to watch play rather than just the best I can do, so here goes:
Warner Stirling Smith Root Kohli Stokes De Kock Rashid Khan Starc Rabada Morkel
Sign me up.

There's a time and a place, and that is when the other team is better than you. The other team should never be better than my mob

Here I go again Warner Azhar Ali Williamson (C) Smith abd Stokes QDK (WK) Starc Rabada Wagner Lyon
Root scores too many 50s and doesn't seem to have it in him to carry on, kohli still has massive chinks in armor so even though he doesn't have a lot of runs recently got to be Kane at no.3 Kohli and pujara too much of a flat track bully to make the cut and abd at 5 just makes sense and while I thought about cook and Vijay, just went with azhar as it gives me right left combination Stokes undoubtedly best all rounder Lyon has shown that he is undoubtedly the best spinner in the world right now and to my mind Wagner is the best short ball bowler in the world and still gets overshadowed every time by boult and southee
This bowling attack will get wickets everywhere and has enough variety and plenty of batting depth

Going for a mix of players I love/bright prospects/top players Chris Gayle (just because this opening pair could be carnage) De Kock (wk) Bahir Shah (7 FC matches and I've decided to hype him as the new Bradman) James Vince Virat Kohli Steven Peter Devereux Smith Kane Williamson Ben Stokes Ian Holland Rashid Khan Kagiso Rabada Jimmy 12th man I'm desperate to fit in: SCurran - in terms of a quality side he'd replace Ian Holland, but Holland is another guy I'm massively over-hyping right now. Must be quality if he won a reality TV competition to find a cricketer which was decommissioned after one series and played one professional game in the 5 years after that. Definitely.

I was going to give that a like, but you had to stuff it up with Chris ‘Baby Don’t Blush’ Gayle, didn’t you WaP? What a tw*t he is. My ‘fun’ team looks a bit different:
Mohammad Shahzad (wk) Solomon Mire Steve Smith I guess Ross Taylor Gary Ballance, who will open the bowling Ben Stokes Moeen Ali Mitchell Starc Mark Wood Kagiso Rabada Stuart Broad (c)
12th man: Paul Collingwood

It's the end of the year, and last year we rethought this. I thought I'd have another stab.
Prithvi Shaw if fit, Tom Latham otherwise Dean Elgar Kane Williamson (c) Virat Kohli (siiiiiiigh) Angelo Mathews if fit, Joe Root otherwise Ben Stokes Ben Foakes Sam Curran/Ravichandran Ashwin Kagiso Rabada Yasir Shah Mohammad Abbas if fit, James Anderson otherwise
Twelfth man Mitch Starc.
I've preserved not many players from my last team. Seam attack's potentially a bit righty-focussed, but I'm bringing in Sam Curran for those pitches where only one spinner is needed.
The biggest decision was number 5. Angelo fought off Root and Nicholls. I think he's come right back into form this year, amidst a collapsing team. He's likely not to come on to bowl, but he's a better part-time option than many.
And then he went and got injured anyway!

Shaheen Shah Afridi: quite good. Probably world XI at the moment? Probably! Rohit Sharma, amazingly Tom Latham Kate Williamson (c) Steve Smith Joe Root on form Rishabh Pant (wk) Ravichandran Ashwin Ravindra Jadeja Kyle Jamieson Jasprit Bumrah Shaheen Shah Afridi Holder is 12th man while Stokes is out. With apologies to Anderson (Bumrah is faster), Cummins (Jamieson is better), Marnus (no room in the top three), and Warner (er... face doesn't fit or something). No apologies to de Kock, who probably gets in on numbers alone but seems like he might be a bit of a baddun. Being a white South African who refuses to kneel with the rest of the team is Not A Good Look. Please, tell me I'm wrong!

I'm struggling to understand why Joe Root needs the 'on form' after his name! Frankly he'd be 4 in my and any other team in the world at the moment! Steve Smith can fkin move the prick him!
Hard to disagree with most of your choices.....Jadeja is the outlier for me though, guess it depends where the match is being played, outside of the sub continent Ashwin seems a place too high at 7...this is where Stokes is a tres useful player, if he were around he'd be 6 for me with Pant shuffling a place down, as it is Holder would get the nod for me outside of the sub continent at 7.
Latham maybe under pressure from Conway?
