There is nothing that will be written about todays game that has not been written before. Groundhog day.

This is I think close to the best uninjured side there is at the moment. But Darren Stevens wasn't playing?

The solid/consistent Championship players in good form in 2021 that haven't played Test cricket XI:
Jake Libby (798r @ 61, Career Avg 35) Alex Davies (579r @ 48, Career Avg 37) Joe Clarke (497r @ 36, Career Avg 38) Josh Bohannon (559r @ 56, Career Avg 45) Ben Brown (584r @ 42, Career Avg 40) Darren Stevens (459r @ 42, Career Avg 35 & 28w @ 20, Career Avg 24) Ed Barnard (580r @ 64, Career Avg 30 & 15w @ 49, Career Avg 28) Ryan Higgins (295r @ 23, Career Avg 32 & 36w @ 23, Career Avg 22) Tom Bailey (26w @ 19, Career Avg 24) Chris Rushworth (46w at 18, Career avg 22) Matt Parkinson (24w at 20, Career avg 24)
Have excluded past and current Test players, but a lot of these get in against their respective numbers Rory Burns (617r @ 47, Career Avg 42) Adam Lyth (634r @ 45, Career Avg 38) Tom Westley (574r @ 41, Career Avg 36) James Vince (489r @ 41, Career Avg 39) Dan Lawrence (495r @ 55, Career Avg 38) Ollie Pope (555r @ 62, Career Avg 51) Ben Duckett (475r @ 40, Career Avg 39) Craig Overton (231r @ 29, Career Avg 22, 37w @ 13, Career Avg 23) Ollie Robinson (33w @ 17, Career Avg 21) Stuart Broad (23w @ 16, Career Avg 27) Dom Bess (23w @ 33, Career Avg 30)
Essentially, looks like most of the form players are tried and tested, and the ones that haven't played are not particularly likely to do any better! Bohannon and Rushworth perhaps stand out among the upper XI, but perhaps, the conclusion basically is... England just aren't very good right now. Pleasing when looking at the stats though to find so many 18-23 year olds already with decent stats (Carlson, Haines, Brooks, Yates, Bamber, Aitchson and a few others!)

Sibley dropped for Malan. I hate this. I understand it, just - but I hate it. Not sure Hameed will be any better as an opener though.

I think there's some sense in bringing back the old guard to try and get us through a year or two rather than putting in young kids before they're ready... But that is the opposite of the logic that brought Hameed in last week. It all looks a bit like flinging shit at a wall and seeing what sticks right now.

If England pick both Saqib Mahmood and Sam Curran ahead of Craig Overton he has every right to be fuming. Especially Saqib, as promising as he is, shouldn't be jumping the queue when Coverton has been running drinks for two years now and tearing up the CC every time they see fit to release him.

Regarding Mahmood, I feel like he's (meant to be) a point-of-difference bowler. It's not so different as Wood or Stone would be, but he seems to be towards the upper end of rfm.
Regarding Curran... that one's fair. I suppose in theory Curran's left-arm angle is also a point of difference, but in practice he's dismally out of form.

Coverton picked!
He's carded to bat 10, in which case I'd suggest he's probably the best 10 ever to play test cricket...

This might not be England's best bowling attack, but it might be England's best batting bowling attack ever...
If only the same applied to the specialist bats!

He's phenomenal. Truly the Darren Stevens of the Test arena. (Only without the batting, but you can't have everything.)
