Would anyone really pick Anderson for the next test? Bloke's completely fucked and surely can't do another. He's not taken a 2nd innings wicket for about 2 years now either, and bowling is the one area where we have strength in depth, COv and Jimmy out wood and leach/parky in? time to give man a rest, unless.... This is to be his last test, in which case let him finish off at OT

I think I still would (if the Test even goes ahead!), he's still easily our best bowler on his day and has a decent enough record at OT, plus there's nothing really to rest him for (the Ashes are ages away and even if he picked up a niggle, he's not our best bowler in Australian conditions so less of a loss). Forecast suggests there'll be plenty in the air tomorrow and a fair bit of cloud throughout, so since it's the last game he's in for me.

I'd pick him if there are four seamers being picked, not if there were three. He needs to be used as a strike bowler really in his current condition.
But sure the England physios and coaches will know his condition better than I!

I think if Mahmood had been fit, my 4 seamer option would have been him, wood, robinson and woakes, in his absence then yes if we go with 4 seamers he gets the nod.
I've been looking at the stats just now for the year vs India, and interesting to see that of our quicks that Woakes, Overton and Robinson all have better averages, and those 3 plus Wood have a better strike rate than Anderson too.....doesn't always tell the full story, and most certainly impacted by his 2nd innings struggles
FYI SCurran's ave and SR worse than all those seamers, worse than Moeen's and even worse than Root!

Looks like we're off today, and probably entirely. Edit: Definitely entirely
Really poor that it's been in doubt for a few days and they're only giving major hints 2 hours before the start. Feel for all the fans that have begun travelling to the ground/booked time off etc
IPL starting 4 days after the end was always a bit mad anyway given how long all the quarantines were just last year

Well, this is going to run and run.
The schedule is ridiculous and things like this are always going to happen, but it doesn't stop it being shitty when it does.

The statement said forfeit for about two minutes. The lawyers are getting going, it seems.

I'm with WaP. Cancelling due to COVID concerns is one thing. Cancelling it two hours before game start is quote another. Cancelling it for Ipple reasons leaves a really bad taste in the mouth.
England would have done the same in India's position, of course.

Has to be a forfeit for me. Seen comparisons to England leaving South Africa hanging but cancelling a whole series before it starts is very different to cancelling a series deciding match on the day. Additionally the difference between letting down empty stands (iirc) and a sell out.
Also arguably a difference between two squad players testing positive vs one support team member. Very clear the main concern is being eligible for the IPL rather than just player safety, so one would hope the ECB pushes for a forfeit. Money talks, though...

Most runs in the series: 564 - Root (avg 94) 368 - Sharma (53) 315 - Rahul (39) 227 - Pujara (32) 218 - Kohli (31)
How brutal would that series have been without Root?! Of those who played more than 1 Test, Hameed (28) has the next best average

Moeen to retire from tests to focus on white ball cricket.
A fascinating player about whom so much is written - much excellent, some utter tosh. At times, an excellent test batsman and an excellent test bowler. Not as consistent as I'm sure he'd have wanted but think the coaching and selection structures have a bit to answer for there.
Here's to many more years of excellence in white ball forms.
