I’ve never seen the ‘Clouderson’ stuff. Just following the wrong/right people? Real talk: this was a shit pitch, wasn’t it. Toss entirely decided the game. Root still had to score the double, but he had a much easier time of it than he would have batting second. Toss was definitely a big influence, but is that so different to most tests in Asia at the moment? In Sri Lanka England got lucky in the first test with the Sri Lankan batsmen playing 'who can get out in the most stupid way?' I think we're probably underestimating how good Root's innings was - England batted all through the best batting period of the game. If England had got ~400 rather than ~600 then India probably get a lot easier time of their first innings and it's much closer to a one innings game.

It absolutely isn’t. I find myself rolling my eyes at a lot of Tests in Asia, tell the truth. Particularly the England-Sri Lanka tour when they were applauded for winning 3-0 when they won the toss 3-0, or the one to the UAE where they were chastised for losing 2-0 when Misbah won three tosses on the bounce. Joe’s double ton was magnificent: I don’t know that he makes it or that England stand a chance if they lose the toss.
I still think the toss has far too much influence over results, especially Test results, especially especially Test results in Asia.

I tend to agree, but I think it's a bit of a structural issue with cricket that the toss makes more of an impact on the chance of winning (even outside of Asia) than basically any other single moment in the game. God knows how you fix that though.

My idea, that nobody will ever go for, is a sealed bid system. Both captains rock up to the ‘toss’ with a sealed envelope, containing the amount of runs they’re willing to sacrifice to win the toss: highest bid gets to choose to bat/bowl and their side gets that deficit to make up. If there’s a tie, the coin goes up.
There’s probably some corruption-related reasons why this wouldn’t work. Otherwise it’s just encouraging groundsmen to make pitches that offer something in the first innings, to the best of their ability.

I just don't think there's a viable alternative to the toss, if you're going down the route of changing it, for me....no toss, away team chooses whether to bat or bowl first. That'd be a real leveller.

Archer a doubt for the 2nd Test due to sickness and an arm injury according to the Guardian. Time to get the Broaderson band back together?

Anderson, Archer, Bess and Buttler out.
Broad, Moeen, Foakes and either Woakes or Stone in.
I... Think we're getting the dream Foakes, Stokes and Woakes line up for the very first time folks! It's taken so long.

I would like them to play Stone. I don’t think they’ll play Stone.
Moeen over Bess is... interesting. I know Bess wasn’t 100% but we haven’t seen Moeen in ages. God knows what he’ll bowl like.

Can only trust that the only people who have seen Moeen bowl for ages are the people making the decisions!
Like both Woakes and Stone so don't really mind who they go with. Depends how much Stokes can bowl I guess.

Talking of things that are nice to see. Moeen, Moeen, Moeen Moeen I'm begging of you please don't take my man There's a confused Dom Bess sat in the changing rooms wondering why he got sacked off for bowling loose only to be replaced by a guy who is, bowling generously....

Ashwin is going to take career best figs on this, reckon 250 could be a winning 1st innings score on this track
