My ability to play the top (or one of the) scoring players of the week is unfuckingcanny! Top scorer in the league by almost 1000 points and i'm bloody 4th!

Think Hampshire would've preferred a COVID call-off! Could well be 5 teams all out before 2pm, that can't've happened for a while! edit: as if on cue, Somerset and Worcs both lose their last wickets at 1:59pm

Cheap wickets for everybody, apart from those batting powerhouses (checks notes) Durham and Leicestershire.

Somerset's top order are batting like they have for several years, and Somerset's lower order aren't bailing them out like they have in the past, despite arguably playing eight front line batsmen in this game.
The non-selection of Will Smeed in first class cricket doesn't seem very sensible, and the continued presence in the line up of some of these guys is getting hard to justify.
FC averages of Somerset batters this season:
Tom Abell 49
<Clear blue water>
Steve Davies 33
<Clear blue water, with Josh Davey and Marchant de Lange living here>
George Bartlett 24 James Hildreth 23 Lewis Goldsworthy 21 Tom Banton 19 Eddie Byrom 14 Tom Lammonby 13 Azhar Ali 12 (One game)
It's er, grim. We don't employ a batting coach to my knowledge, which feels like something that needs to change quickly.

Yeah not good from Somerset, but it's been a v v odd season again and missing Gregory and Overton is massive

Gregory and Overton are brilliant players and key to us with the ball and the bat, but it's not acceptable to have one front line batsman averaging more than 25. We're not even playing on big turning, low scoring tracks at Taunton any more.
I don't know what the answer is, but we don't have a batting coach to sack!

It is, which made me wonder whether every side is like this now, so I looked up how many players each county has that average over 30 in FC cricket this season (min qualification of 200 runs to avoid one game wonders)
7 Nottinghamshire: 7 (Hameed, Duckett, Clarke, Slater, Mullaney, Moores, Patterson-White)
6 Northants: 6 (Gouldstone, Rossington, Vasconcelos, Keogh, Zaib, Berg) Leicestershire: 6 (Harris, Rhodes, Barnes, Swindells, Ackermann, Evans) Lancashire: 6 (Bohannon, Jennings, Davies, Wood, Vilas, Wells) Yorkshire: 6 (Ballance, Brook, Willey, Lyth, Root, Hill) Surrey: 6 (Pope, Amla, Burns, Foakes, Smith, Stoneman)
5 Durham: 5 (Bedingham, Lees, Young, Eckersley, Jones) Essex: 5 (Lawrence, Walter, Westley, Browne, Harmer) Hampshire: 5 (Vince, Holland, Gubbins, Northeast, Barker) Sussex: 5 (Orr, Brown, Haines, Ibrahim, Robinson)
4 Gloucestershire: 4 (van Buuren, Hammond, Bracey, Cockbain)
Middlesex: 4 (Robson, Eskinazi, Gubbins, White) Somerset: 4 (Abell, Gregory, van der Merwe, Davies) Warwickshire: 4 (Hain, Malan, Sibley, Yates)
3 Kent: 3 (Stevens, Leaning, Robinson) Glamorgan: 3 (Carlson, C Cooke, Labuschagne) Worcestershire: 3 (Libby, Barnard, Haynes) Derbyshire: 3 (Critchley, Hosein, Madsen)
So not the worst, but the fact that only one of those is paid for their red-ball batting is a concern. Not keeping great company either.

Surprisingly low some of these, especially given a decent amount of the players that do qualify have missed various games with England/switching clubs.
Definitely does seem to have been some major swing towards the bowlers this season, when looking at players who've taken 20+ wickets at an average of 20 or lower in the last two championship seasons:
2019: 9 players Averaged 16: Abbott, Gregory Averaged 18: Leach, Stevens, Harmer Averaged 19: JOverton, Maharaj Averaged 20: Virdi, Siddle
2021: 20 players Averaged 13: Fletcher, COverton Averaged 14: Abbas Averaged 16: Broad Averaged 17: Robinson, Neser, Cook Averaged 18: Rhodes, Rushworth, Norwell Averaged 19: Murtagh, Bailey, Gilchrist, Snater, Barker Averaged 20: Paterson, Stevens, Davey, Thompson, Hutton
Really hits home how good Notts are if they have 7 batsmen averaging over 30 (+Northeast atm) AND 4 bowlers taking wickets at 20s or less.
Could well mostly be 2019 D1 bowlers ripping into D2 batsmen but 8/9 of the 2019 names were in 2019 D1 compared with 15/20 of the 2021 names. Spinners make up almost half the 2019 list and don't feature at all in 2021, which either means the pitches are worse so we're not reaching the spinnier stages of games, or the batting is worse. Probably both.
The real key statistic here though is when you spot the only man to appear on both lists. GOAT

Great research W&P.
I wonder if we underestimate how much harder it is to bat in cricket in modern times because overall scores haven't dipped that much as most teams bat to 10/11 now, rather than ye olde days when you'd have a shocking tail but 6 batsmen averaging 35+
Notts really do look the team to beat.
In other news, imagine being 415/2 and being the guy who scored four runs. Sorry Stevie Eskinazi, a real tough watch.
