Don’t know about Bedingham, but Behardien was always very bad at international level and that’s probably doing SA a favour. Bedingham probably isn’t, that’s probably a very bad thing.

Confusingly, it means we're going to have to actually learn to distinguish between Saffers-with-UK-passports and true Kolpaks. No, I don't have a list of who's who... I think at Somerset Philander is a true kolpak, van der Merwe has a Dutch passport so comes down to what the EU worker rules are, Eddie Byrom has an Irish passport (according to Google, interesting one for him) and young Nathan Gilchrist has a UK one. Pretty sure they'll up it to two overseas players to compensate as well, so could be interesting. How many current kolpaks would their sides hire as genuine overseas- quite a few actually I think?

We wait on tenterhooks to see just how xenophobic our govt goes with EU worker rules.....will be interesting to see what happens, for Yorks we've only got Olivier Kolpaking coupled with Ashwin / Maharaj as overseas so we'd certainly be looking for a 2 overseas allowance. Quick Wiki check throws out this en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Kolpak_cricketers for a list of Kolpaks, and there aren't actually that many on there tbh, worst affected looks like it could be Hants with Edwards, Abbott and Roussow. Tough luck for Roussow as no one in their right mind would ditch Abbott!

Will be interesting to see the effect next year - probably minimal for Hants; imagine Edwards is on his way to retirement, and Rossouw is now on white-ball only contract (well just t20 as he's playing 100) - so we'll likely have Abbott +1 as overseas. If it'd had been a year or two ago, would've been big issue.
Hants get bad rep for having Fuller, Holland, Wheal too - but they're all on UK passports.
I'm interested in how it may effect Somerset - Philander is definitely a Kolpak good signing but never really seemed keen to contribute long stints for SA, may be less attractive as an overseas option... I'm sure he'll still rip through teams though.

Get what you mean about Philander but I think he fits our squad makeup, we have Coverton and Gregory who are genuinely good bats (and Bess when he plays) so we'll almost always play five bowlers and the aforementioned plus Josh Davey are willing workhorses, so Philander shouldn't ever need to do the donkey work (oh, and Abell is a more than handy sixth bowler) and can just bowl his new ball glamour spells. Reckon his batting will be pretty effective at this level too.
Byrom Davies Abell Hildreth Wade Bartlett Gregory Coverton Philander Bess Leach
With Davey, Joverton, Brooks and Banton all dropping in and out of that team. Pretty exciting lineup all in.

Bresnan’s just left Yorkshire. It’s probably time to be fair.

It's a pretty well worn path for a late career Yorkshire player to go skipper a D2 side for a bit, isn't it? Very much in the tradition of things.
