Yup, it's confirmed. Bairstow back in the squad despite doing next to nothing. Him, Anderson, and Wood are the names added to the touring party to SA.

Smith-Lord's logic:
Don't consider the best keeper in the country Drop your keeper who made runs @ 24 and make the backup keeper guy who made runs @ 25 the main wicketkeeper Make the newbie who is not even the second choice keeper at his county the backup keeper - and play him Now that your new backup made an impression, push him further behind the pecking order and bring back in the guy you "dropped for not scoring runs"
And still, don't consider the best keeper in the country
That makes absolute sense, yeah

And as a follow-up, I would like to add that Foakes is just the second most talented keeper in recent times. The first one was named Michael Bates and at 29, is no longer playing.

To be fair he really couldn’t bat from what I know. Pankaj Singh levels of nonbattingness.

While it is true that he can't bat that much, he certainly is twice the keeper Foakes is. And naturally, picking up a specialist keeper is very much similar to picking up your best bowler, isn't it? And what would the poor chap that comes in at No 7 or 8 do if all those above him can't score big? Maybe he should have been given a chance in the limited-overs games where his batting wouldn't matter much.
I still can't get my head around to understand why Buttler keeps in LO and Bairstow keeps in tests while they both play. Methinks, it is more a decision to keep both of them happy than to have the balls to make a firm decision.

I personally gave up trying to understand the selection policy of England some time in the mid-90s.

Squads out for the white ball games:
ODI squad: Eoin Morgan (capt), Moeen Ali, Jonny Bairstow, Tom Banton, Pat Brown, Sam Curran, Tom Curran, Joe Denly, Chris Jordan, Saqib Mahmood, Dawid Malan, Matt Parkinson, Adil Rashid, Joe Root, Jason Roy, Chris Woakes
T20I squad: Eoin Morgan (capt), Moeen Ali, Jofra Archer, Jonny Bairstow, Jos Buttler, Pat Brown, Sam Curran, Tom Curran, Joe Denly, Chris Jordan, Dawid Malan, Matt Parkinson, Adil Rashid, Jason Roy, Ben Stokes, Mark Wood
Interesting to see Joe Denly in both of them, he is having quite a renaissance. Smith-Lord is choosing to define his tenure as a selector by picks like these.
Also, why has Liam Dawson been packed off to the oblivion?

SA Test Squad: Faf du Plessis (capt), Temba Bavuma, Quinton de Kock, Dean Elgar, Beuran Hendricks, Keshav Maharaj, Pieter Malan, Aiden Markram, Zubayr Hamza, Anrich Nortje, Dane Paterson, Andile Phehlukwayo, Vernon Philander, Dwaine Pretorius, Kagiso Rabada, Rudi Second, Rassie van der Dussen
I realise the same rather applies to England, but there's a hell of a lot of unproven players in that squad.

Also all of them from their names look white. Not sure how the quota thing is going to work.
Incidentally the top-ranked bowler in the provincial competition is black. But also 32.

Yes, I did have similar thoughts. Bavuma, Rabada and mahbybe Phehlukwayo should feature in the first XI. Expect the team to look something like this, which suggests they have a lot of depth for not very many positions...
Elgar Markram/Malan Hamza Faf van der Dussen Bavuma De Kock/Second (suggestion is De Kock is not a lock for selection) Philander Phehlukwayo/Hendricks/Paterson/Nortje Rabada Maharaj
With Pretorious coming in for maybe van der Dussen if they want five bowlers.
Odd to have such a big squad but basically only two or three actual selection decisions.

Pieter Malan, hmm.. Looks like it is time for another "But you're not even the best batsman in your family" sledge. Impressive.

Strange buildup day today as half the England team is down with illness, so it's just Anderson, Curran, Woakes and Parkinson actually there to bowl. Bit concerning ahead of the test series, hopefully a short lived thing.
