I'm expecting a relatively unchanged squad. With neither Burns nor Jennings having disgraced themselves, and the pitches in the Windies normally conducive to spin, Denly might be able to take a break. Rustlings suggest that the Great Jason Roy mistake might happen. Otherwise: Burns | Denly | Jennings | Woakes
| Bairstow
| Rashid | Rooooot | Stone | Stokes | Broad | Buttler |
| Foakes
| (come on, he's a better bat than Moe)
| Moe |
| Curran |
| Leach |
| Jimmy |
|
That's a possible bowling line-up, but not the only one. England will have to concede that they can't fit six bowlers into the side with Moe and Foakes at 7 and 8. This suggestion provides five different types of bowling, given that Stokes' 'enforcing' is substantially different to Jimmy's swing, reverse swing, and containment. However, it has a few concerns: - No partnership-breaker. On a good batting pitch, Rashid could trundle in and prise out a wicket with magic; or Stone with sheer pace. Stokes is probably the closest thing there.
- No Broaderson. I think that's the right way to go, but you'll be surprised (or tediously unsurprised) with how many people don't.
- Is Curran's left-arm gentle and inexperienced swing bowling going to be that useful?
There's no right answer to any of this. Heck, if Root bowls a bit more, you could swap Moe for Rash without weakening the tail much and have three different directions of spin again! Although he should probably just not bowl himself as much. Curious to hear people's thoughts.
As for the Windies, they've got a decent bowling line-up these days, especially if Holder's back. Him and Roston Chase go a serious way towards making the side balanced. Roach/Gabriel/Holder isn't exactly Marshal/Holding/Garner/Croft, but it's still a decent proposition. The batting remains as porous as a sponge torus, but Shai Hope enjoys batting against England.
Might be an interesting series. Or Root might win all the tosses again and flatten them.

Another away series against poor opposition presents a very welcome chance to notch a few more wins. Could feasibly have some games with 3 spinners in the Windies too, but would expect that one of Rashid or Leach will make way for the Broaderson train to pull into, Really? Again? Station. Bairstow's got #3 nailed on for the tour following his ton here, and the ECB will no doubt be hoping that Foakes picks up an injury so that they can drop him guilt free and give the gloves back to YJB so his bottom lip stops fucking quivering. Embarrassing son, tha's a Yorkshireman.
I'd truly hope that the make up of the team would be decided once pitch conditions are clarified, but as of now i'd expect England to go with:
Burns Jennings YJB Root Stokes Buttler Curran Mo Broad Anderson Leach

You think they'll drop MotS Foakes? I know what they did with Curran, but that was after one match! I'd be surprised if even the ECB did that.
Really? Again? Station, on the other hand, I'm very much expecting we'll draw into. Who would you pick Pierre?

I really do think they'd drop Foakes, I think that 3 spinners prob won't be needed and they'd see it as an easy choice to drop Foakes to bring a seamer or all rounder back in, or to play 6 bowlers with Mo as a '2nd spinner'. In spite of him having only played 1 match there, I suspect they are desperate for YJB to make a success of the #3 position as it's been a pain in the ass for them for much time now. Buttler, to be fair to him, has been up there with Curran as our most consistent performer since he was brought back in, given they can both keep to a decent but not as strong a standard.
Who i'd pick depends on what the pitches are going to be like and how many spinners are needed, if we needed to play 3 spinners then i'd go with the team that's played this last test, only with Jimmy in for Broad. If 2 spinners needed then one of them would be dropped for Curran, as for which spinner....v tough call, I think at this point it'd be Rashid to sit out. However....if the pitches are a 1 spinner requirement then I personally would play Leach and drop Mo - this gives Foakes the best chance of retaining his position as with our all rounders I think we're strong enough batting wise to bat him at 8 with Stokes and Curran at 5 and 7, I'd drop Mo as I feel Leach offers more control, as for who to bring in, i've not even mentioned Woakes or Stone yet and Broad is an obvious choice to come in too.
I guess, in the end, I have a lot of sympathy with the ECB here! There is some genuine competition for places from 5-11. If we take Burns, Jennings, Bairstow & Root as givens 1-4 (in the absence of ANY competition there...) 5-8 we've got Stokes, Buttler, Foakes, Curran, Mo, Woakes and 9, 10, Jack we've Leach, Broad, Anderson, Rashid, Stone(well maybe not)
So, after much waffling, and estimating I suspect the team will be (my preferences in brackets)
Burns (Burns) Jennings (Jennings) Bairstow (Bairstow) Root (Root) Stokes (Stokes) Buttler (w) (Buttler) Curran (Curran) Mo (Foakes w) Broad (Broad) Leach (Leach) Anderson (Anderson)

Don't tell me you're waiting at Really? Again? station too! I really do think we don't need more than one of Stuart and Jimmy in the team at any one time anywhere outside England and New Zealand. That extends to Woakes too. Even at home, I'm not sure about it. The best seam attacks don't rely on multiple rfms: Australia has one, SA has one very good one, New Zealand has two but one's Neil Wagner who bowls completely differently to Tim Southee.
For me, the attack of the future (including Stokes) looks like Curran, one of Broakeserson (sorry, that was contrived), one of Stoverton (again...), and a spinner. Leach is the number one choice with that attack, because you've got two 'sources of magic' in Stoverton and Stokes so don't need Rashid, and Moe shouldn't spin on his own.
That said, I agree with your sympathy for the ECB. It's hard to leave Broad out, just as it's hard to leave Moe out, or Jonny. I do think they'll keep Foakes though.

Yeah i'm at the station.....for me Stokes, Curran and Anderson are givens it then comes down to who to choose as the 4th seamer - who'd be the 2nd seamer in reality, given that Stone didn't get a shot in Sri Lanka, I can't imagine he's in England's thinking at the moment and maybe what he needs next year is another season of county cricket to develop rather than a mix of drinks carrying and not being trusted to bowl any key overs for England. That said I would hope that he gets a shot in a test or so in WI and gets to make his case, with a bit of rotation with one of Broaderson sitting out a test or two.
As a long term detractor of Mr B, i'm happy that the ECB have rotated him out in SL, I think the message has been sent that he is no longer guaranteed a spot and if that message has got through and he bowls better (like to be fair he has been since NZ) then job done.

Pitches in the Caribbean have quickened up a touch again - given that the Windies have a good crop of young quicks coming through not surprisingly - and they also now use the Duke ball, so there's a bit more assistance on offer to the seamers than we saw in Sri Lanka. That also means we're likely to see Anderson and Broad resume new balls duties, and Stone sitting frustratingly on the sidelines again, although if Broad brings the sort of rhythm and fire - and the slips hold a few catches for him at last, in fairness! - he showed in that first innings in Colombo that's no bad thing at all. The presence of the precious Duke also probably means Woakes also stays in the party, possibly at the expense of Stone, but I wouldn't be surprised if both still went (Woakes would also be considered an injury replacement for Curran should he get injured). I don't think we'll see England playing three spinners at any point, but I still think they'll take all three - one, because there is still the chance of the odd slow turner and two, to give themselves the luxury of picking between Leach and Rashid as the second spinner, as Mo has likely reestablished himself as the frontline option. If the track looks like a real venomous spitter then Leach's accuracy becomes a major weapon, but on a flatter track Rashid is more likely to conjure a wicket out of nothing, so it's a nice choice to have. If Archer sticks to his T20 commitments I expect a relatively unchanged squad, although I wouldn't be surprised to see Clarke or Roy come in for Denly, who was a horses-for-courses pick for the tour who never got into the starting paddock.
Root, Burns, Jennings, Bairstow, Buttler, Stokes, Foakes, Ali, Anderson, Broad, Curran, Leach, Rashid, Stone/Woakes, Clarke/Roy.

That's fair, I'd forgotten the Duke. Still don't want to see Broaderson again though, but I agree it's likely. Unless, as you say, some time off means Broad can consistently bowl up around 90mph.
I'm not sure Moe's re-established himself as the frontline option. I think Leach has probably done that, and Moe's underlined that he plays better when there's another spinner in the side. However King Cricket made a similar point to you: that England could perhaps benefit more from Rashid under normal circumstances, that they have consistency through their seam attack, and that Rashid brings the magic touch.

4 wickets in 5 balls for Broad in the warm-up match. Including the 11th and 12th wickets of the innings. Scenes.

He wouldn't have played anyway.
18 wickets thus far. Warm-up games these days are utter bollocks.

Calling it a warm up match is an offense to proper warm up matches, it's like one of those tour matches you get in our country when a sat team travels round another county, inevitably playing a mish mash of whoever is available on a mon afternoon. Shocker.

Seems to be either the case that you get decent players in one of these nonsense matches, or play proper first-class games against a third-string FC side.
