I would love to see Hameed being picked, but I don't think Ed Smith will bring him in with him not playing for Lancashire.

Welcome James! Some interesting points, and agree entirely about picking horses for courses on overseas tours (and similarly, Woakes in every home test and never away. Except maybe in NZ).
Leach bowls SLA by the way - Bess is the right arm offie at Somerset - so Rashid, Moeen and Leach gives you one of everything (unless you count left arm wristspin but nobody bowls that in England).
Hameed is a very interesting case and I think there's more to that case than is probably public knowledge. Hope he sorts it all out but I'd be very unlikely to pick him at the moment.
As for picking batsmen who can play spin, it's an interesting one- Somerset were promoting the other day that Tom Abell averages 100 against spin this season, and that Hildreth isn't far behind, but neither of them would want to bat in the top three (Abell has moved down to five after starting his career opening).
Very tough selection job. Would probably go with something like: (I mean, I lie, I'd pick Hildreth, but this is within reasonable boundaries...)
1. Burns 2. Jennings (mostly just from a lack of other options) 3. Moeen (not a 3 in England but I think perfect for the role in Asia) 4. Root 5. Stokes 6. Buttler 7. Bairstow 8. S Curran (taking the new ball) 9. Rashid 10. Leach 11. Anderson (doesn't want to be rested)
Then the rest of the party being Stone, Joverton, Bess, Vince to bat four or down only, and A.N.Opener. Would be tempted by Alex Davies I think.

anyone know what time the squad announcement will be? I'm fully prepared to go off the handle if all rumours are true

Squad out:
Root Ali Anderson Bairstow Burns Broad Buttler Curran Denly Jennings Leach Pope Rashid Stokes Stone Woakes
So no resting of Anderson and Broad, but three spinners and Stone suggests some rotation on tour. Denly and Burns both in, no Roy, TCurran, Ball, Overton twins, Bess.

Pope instead of Vince and Stone instead of Bess were the differences from my prediction.
Now to see if Broad starts over Curran because the ECB are muppets.

Half the squad have names beginning with the first four letters of the alphabet, my theory is that Ed Smith just called leafed through his phone book and stopped once he'd got to 16.

Pretty close to the squad I predicted with Andersen and Broad in for two players I picked.

While taking into account the fact that in terms of genuine quality there's not much on offer, I think that's a pretty garbage squad. England are supposed to be developing a squad to perform better overseas: all they've done here is put Stone in, and let's face it he's last in the pecking order to play looking at the names picked. They've given up a spot for another spinner in a country that has probably been the most spin friendly in the last three years or so to bring along two bowlers in Broad and Woakes who have disappointing overseas records, and picking a decent but nothing more Div 2 no.4 batsman because of his part-time leg spin smells like funky selection for the sake of it. It was a tough ask anyway; with a team made up predominantly of a group of players who've struggled to transfer their form away from England I fear this could be a hiding, although I reserve the right to leap around like a joyous lunatic if Rashid and Leach spin us to victory in one of the Tests.

Can sympathise with that. It's a strange squad with six pace options when I'd be tempted to play three at most (Stokes, Curran + one specialist, and Curran mostly for footmarks!) but not sure there are obvious players who've missed out. I'd argue that Somerset's batsmen have more experience playing spin than most and Hildreth + Abell in particular but neither bat in the top three which is where the true vacancies are. There are a lot of 1a, 1b options who are good players but weren't crying out to be picked, and for all the talk of disrespecting the domestic game, Burns, Denly and Stone have excelled in it this season (Denly admittedly more in white ball).
Personally, I'd have ommitted Broad or Woakes and taken another specialist spinner - probably Bess but wouldn't have minded Virdi one bit, but I don't hate the squad as much as I would if it had featured Roy or something.
Lions squad could be more fun as usual, suspect Malan or Vince will captain. Playing Pakistan in Abu Dhabi. Would hazard a guess at a squad along these lines:
Malan (C) Gubbins Robson Vince Clarke Foakes (wk) Coverton Joverton Porter Bess Parkinson Virdi
And then a couple of their usual left field youngsters - would hazard a guess at Harry Brook, Matt Fisher and Saqib Mahmood. Would like to see Tom Abell get a go, and Tom Bailey quietly had a fantastic year but maybe is a bit too RFM.

Pope would have been better off playing for the Lions IMO, rather than carrying the drinks in Sri Lanka. If it looks like he's not going to play I'd be tempted as the England management to fly him over - it's a fairly short hop from Colombo to the UAE. I reckon if the rumours that Archer is going to be allowed to qualify through a loophole next year then we might see him play too, Kieswetter played for the Lions before he was fully qualified for England so there is a precedent there. Other Lions bolters: Eskinazi, O. Robinson, Bracey, McKerr, Critchley. Would be very surprised not to see Livingstone involved too.
