You can see the logic, they're looking for a "proper" quick with Garton, Wood and presumably Mahmood although I've never seen him bowl. Porter was just not ignorable and Coughlin... well not really sure to be honest.

He's moved away from Durham, and clearly the ECB want to reward that sort of behaviour.

I agree with you Nemo that Mahmood has been picked for his pace and also due to his sling-arm action which helps his death bowling. As for Coughlin, I think they have picked him for his potential to become a solid all-rounder.

Mahmood was knocking on the door for selection and I believe he was part of the pace programme last season. Loads of potential and he bowled brilliantly in the last game. Just got to hope that Onions doesn't make him cry for game time.

PORTER OUT OF LIONS CAMP
Essex seamer Jamie Porter will miss the England Lions' training camp in Australia due to a stress fracture in his lower back and will be replaced by 19-year-old Worcestershire quick Josh Tongue, the ECB have confirmed.
Unfortunate news for Porter, hopefully he can come back from this as soon as possible.

The Lions beat a strong Perth Scorchers side by 12 runs in T20 match in the first match at the new 55,000-capacity Perth Stadium. Saqib Mahmood was the most impressive taking 4-14 from his four overs. Scorecard - www.ecb.co.uk/matches/7227

Imagine that was an interesting experience for David Willey. Great figures for Saqib, seems like England rate him higher than Lancashire at the moment. Wonder if he's one of "those" players who would probably play better outside of English conditions, perhaps not unlike Crane.
Maybe we should do a deal with Cricket Australia where we send them a couple of proper quicks and leggies and we take a few Aussie swing bowlers...

I was excited until I saw ‘T20’.

Bess has never played a professional 50 over game and has played one T20 18 months ago. So he's in the white ball squad only. Interesting.

SNE is in the white ball squad too, following Duckett’s beer-flinging. I don’t know his white ball credentials: I just hope he scores 50 off 95 balls in a T20 and beats the selectors about the head with his bat until they notice.
And anyone curious about Garton’s inclusion after the Ashes should get in line behind the selectors.

He scored a century in one of the recent North vs South matches. He should be in the Test squad for my money. (Kent bias obviously!)

Lots of the players picked on potential rather than performance.

Pleased to see 3 Essex players in there, even though the two that qualified through the PCA rankings (Cook and Bopara) are not but that isn't much of a surprise.
Will be interesting to see how Paul Walter gets on, one for the future. Left arm seamer and he is well over 6 foot tall. Only played 4 List A matches for Essex mind, so bit of a surprise to see him there.
