Thoroughly deserved win for Pakistan, although I feel for Chris Woakes since Yasir Shah will get MotM. He was the difference between the teams though. England are looking horrendous for the subcontinent tour this year. On the plus side, Ballance put in a decent shift today, considering. Oh, Vince. More work needed in first class cricket for sure. Hm, that sounds familiar. Wonder who's been saying that? Oh yes, everyone but Matt.

I've only argued that he had a decent case for getting a chance in tests, not that he is the finished article. Well, now he's had a chance and not taken it, and it may be better to learn more in the CC. Although frankly I'm not sure what else he can learn from Div 2 if Hants get relegated, but that's another topic. Will be very interesting to see who makes the team for Old Trafford. Anderson and Stokes coming back (probably), so who makes way? Do they keep faith with Mo? Do they keep faith with Vince, Ballance or neither?

Now that was a proper game. Never thought a sports office in India would be rooting for Pakistan. Well, there'a always a first time for everything, I suppose.

Fantastic game, wonderful to see this team given a proper challenge. I'm not as down on the England side as some, but nor was I as high on them a few weeks ago - Pakistan are a properly good team 1 through 11 - okay, maybe 2 through 11 as Shan Masood is dreadful.
Anderson back in for Ball, Stokes...? Not sure really, not likely to get in as a bat alone. Maybe for Finn, but then you have Moeen at 9 which is getting silly.
Old Trafford is England's fortress but conditions should suit Pakistan's seamers. Should be a cracker.

Cook, Hales, Borthwick, Root, Ballance (I am amazed at this but his 43 was good stuff and the ball that got him was incredible), Stokes, Bairstow, Woakes, Moe (because you have to have A spinner), Broaderson.
I really really would quite like Woakes at 8, Moe at 9, with the latter being told he moves back up if he gets a couple of non-ridiculous red-inkers. I think the former is actually the better batsman, 155 or no 155. I don't think that will happen though.
Nor Borthwick for Vince actually, let's be honest. I do wonder if the latter will play all four Tests this series though, if he looks seriously out of his depth again in the next Test. Borthwick's part-time bowling is better to.
I think they will reluctantly have to let Finn go.

After Vince's 41 they may give him another test. Can't complain with 5 tests. Most openers recently have had 7 before being discarded, but they usually scored a ton in their 2nd or 3rd. Ballance looked good in the second innings too. I like Woakes more than Moe at 8 as well, but can't see them doing it.
I think the most likely is:
Cook, Hales, Root, Vince, Ballance, Stokes, Bairstow, Ali, Woakes, Broad, Anderson
I was going to include my first choice XI but I honestly don't know who I'd pick in the middle order.

Moeen needs to Goeen. Montana, Ballance and Bairstow are all county cricketers. There is no shame in that. None whatsoever. There are still a few people in this world (I happen to be one of them) who want fame like they want a colonoscopy. I think it's simply a matter of finding the guys out there who will shine in the limelight.
That being said, I do give Vince some credit. He is under enormous pressure and in my opinion steadied that innings to a point that would've given England a real shot in times past.

Bairstow!? Surely you jest! Maybe not as a keeper, but as a batsman he's probably the third best in the team.
Also, "Montana"?

Yes, Bairstow. I said this over a month ago in the Sri Lanka thread. Today was his high score since then. Not a 50. I stand behind it. belleoftheredball Jun 11, 2016 13:32:47 GMT -4 belleoftheredball said: I've never really gotten it on with Bairstow. This purple patch of his has always reminded me a bit of a teenager....ie "don't worry, he's just going through a phase". As for Montana, that's Vince and I promised not to show you a picture

Well it is far too early to jettison him because of a gut feeling that it might have been a phase, and he did as well in this match with the bat as anyone bar Cook.
And I am grateful for the lack of picture.

I'd guessed Vince via the slightly more roundabout route of Hannah Montana - Vincent Hannah -James Vince but evidently there's a shorter route...

Very good win for Pakistan, both teams are very similar and I think England will come back strongly in the next test. I would make one change with Anderson replacing Finn, and let Stokes get more match fitness.

Definitely not arguing that Bairstow should be dropped. It's just my opinion that he will eventually be found out. I am, however, arguing that Moeen should be dropped. It's a pity because I think his batting was seriously hampered when the coaches started shifting him around in the order. I think he lost his confidence and hasn't recovered. My guess is that he will be given a respite from the coaches & continue to play because they know they effed him up and aren't willing to punt on Ansari or anyone else because they don't want to mentally screw up another young talent!

I'M OBVIOUSLY biased but will someone give the badger a chance. Who has a better chance against top quality fast bowling than a guy who plays half his games at CLS and against s Stokes, Wood, Onions and Mt Rushmore

Finn and Ball released from tomorrow's squad, predictably. Rashid's still in though.
